Review: The Color Run Manchester

Dubbed the Happiest 5k on the Planet, this one of a kind feel good five-kilometer un-timed race celebrating health, happiness, individuality, and giving back to the community, with a growing national focus on improving health and wellness.

The Color Run originated in Phoenix, Arizona where the first event took place in January 2012 with only 6,000 participants. Needless to say in its first year it became the largest five-kilometer event series in the US, with 600,000 finishers in 2012. London was the first event that landed on our shores in the UK, with other locations such as Manchester, Belfast and Brighton popping up around the country.

The event was held around The Etihad Campus, formerly the host of The 2002 Commonwealth Games and home to Manchester City FC. If you’re familiar with the area you’ll know it’s not one of the most attractive locations. With no official starting time, we arrived like thousands of other runners dressed head to toe in white with the occasional burst of color, before being funneled into the starting chute. Luckily enough we managed to bag ourselves a spot at the very front of the starting line! Runners had to pass through each of the four zones where volunteers would douse participants in an array of brightly colored powders. The fun didn’t end there; once the race was completed, each color runner was presented with one bag of color for the Finish Festival where crowds celebrated the arrival of new runners. Who needs a medal anyway!

My verdict, at approximately £25 a pop the race had a hefty price tag for such a short distance but definitely lived up to the hype. Take note, its not a race to do by yourself the more the merrier in my opinion. If you’re looking to get absolutely filthy and have barrels of fun with family and friends, then this is the race for you!
